About Halie

"I'm Halie, and I'm very good at what I do."

Hi friend! Let’s speed past the boring stuff: BFA in photography, Emily Carr University, ten years in business….boring. That’s all the dry details that mean…very little. They don’t tell you anything about me- and whether or not I’m the photographer for you! So here we go instead:

I love dancing and performing, speaking loudly, and watching live entertainers do their thing. I’ll whisper, “what a sweet baby,” at every dog I see on the street, and ALWAYS take an extra moment to walk a little slower past a blooming flower bed. I grew up in Las Vegas, which afforded me a love of showgirls, gauche sequin outfits, and visual excess. Once I landed in Vancouver and finished university, I had already danced my way into a vibrant network of performers and artists and couldn’t think of a more opportunity-filled place to call home.

Beautiful things make me move more slowly and thoughtfully through this world, and you’re one of them! Photos are magic because you can freeze a person in their truest essence, maybe in a way they’ve never seen themselves before. The best part? You get to see the magic for yourself when we’re done!

Your session with me won’t be “posed”; I set your portrait experience up so it just “happens”. I want to make sure I’m setting you up to feel a natural, effortless, and comfortable way in front of the camera. Once you get going, it’s like water in motion! Is it tacky to say it’s like a dance? Yes. Is it fun and accurate to say that? Also yes. Is there usually also me happy-dancing once I know we’ve got the shot? YEP, BRING ON DISCO ALBUMS, TIME FOR A HAPPY DANCE.

When I’m not behind the camera, I’m usually in the dance studio, coaching beginner and professional dancers alike. A photoshoot is like a dance class, and you can rest assured that I will guide you through your shoot every step of the way. If you send me your favourite playlist, we can crank it up and shake all the nerves out before we start (not required, but definitely a popular request). Your session should feel fun, comfortable, and easy.

There’s no need to be afraid of the vulnerability that comes with being yourself in front of the camera. I’m here to be your guide. Have you ever done a cold water dip? It can seem scary and uncomfortable (and damn does the icy water hurt your feet), but it’s so liberating. It makes you feel exhilarated alive and passes by like a breeze when you have someone to talk you through the whole thing. This is your cold water dip. You ready to jump in?

When there isn’t a camera in my hands, I’m on stage! You can learn a little more about me here!
